Everything about Jaywick totally explained

Jaywick is a small seaside village near Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex on the North Sea coast of England. It was originally intended as a holiday resort for Londoners. Many of the houses were poorly constructed and were only intended for short-term holiday use. As time has passed, more and more people moved into the area and stayed.

People and housing

The population includes large numbers of retired and working professionals. A 2007 report by property website Mouseprice (External Link) found that six out of Eastern England's ten cheapest streets in which to buy property are in Jaywick. The cheapest street in the region is Austin Avenue, Jaywick, with an average house price of £51,588.
Parts of the Brooklands area faces demolition, with new modern housing planned. Local residents fear that the character and community of Jaywick may be lost forever.

Transport

Arts

Jaywick Martello Tower is now an arts venue. In 2005 the Tower hosted a music project called Soft Ices.

History

Miniature railway

An 18" gauge miniature railway (External Link) operated in Jaywick from 1936 to 1939. The locomotive was a model of a GNR Stirling 4-2-2.

Flood of 1953

In 1953, a storm surge flooded Jaywick, killing over 35 people. Since then, sea defences have been put in place and many precautions have been made to avoid future flooding.
